Twinkl Phoneme Pop Suite (British Phonics Game)

Whether you are a teacher who wants to use this App to enhance children’s learning alongside your letters and sounds sessions, or a parent who wants to support your child’s learning of phonics at home, this App has something for everyone!

This app covers all the phoneme grapheme correspondences in Phase One, Two & Three of the DfES Letters & Sounds Publication.

The Twinkl Phoneme Pop Suite allows children to learn and demonstrate ability in letter sound and name recognition:

A letter sound or letter name is read aloud and balloons with letters on rise to the top of the screen.

The child has to pop the correct corresponding balloon, which contains the same letter sound or name.

The letters or sounds can be toggled on or off, depending on the difficulty required.
There are also different levels of difficulty, which will cater for a range of abilities.

This activity is useful to practice both letter sound and name recognition and is key to learning in these Phases of Letters and Sounds.

Reading Magic Deluxe - Learning to Read Through 3 Advanced Phonics Games

READING MAGIC 1 Short Vowel Words Deluxe can help your child’s future reading success.

READING MAGIC focuses on CVC (consonant - vowel - consonant) words, such as cat, box and pig. In the first part of the app, the words are categorized by middle vowel sounds. In the second part of the app, the words are sorted by categories rather than by vowel sound.

READING MAGIC has over 200 words to interest your child, and help them learn how to blend, segment, and read CVC words.

READING MAGIC features both male and female voices for every word and picture.

READING MAGIC stays committed to time tested phonics principles, to techniques proven to be successful.

READING MAGIC will give your child solid and direct experience with letters and sounds to help build their phonemic awareness skills. It will help improve your child’s phonological processing ability guiding them towards becoming a good reader.

READING MAGIC has three skill levels for reading development:

Blending
Blending is taking individual letter sounds and combining or blending them into a meaningful word.  It could be called “auditory reading” or reading just by sounds with NO letters.

This can be a difficult task when starting off and will take practice and patience to get the hang of it. The process of turning /b/  +  /e/  +  /l/  +  /t/ into “belt” is a neurological challenge for emerging readers. It may take some practice to develop this skill, but the time spent is well worth it.  Blending is the best way of preparing a child for the much more difficult and essential skill of segmenting.

Segmenting
Segmenting is one of the most important skills children need for successful spelling, reading and writing. Segmenting can be difficult. One way to look at segmenting is that it is spelling words using the sounds of the letters rather than the names of the letters.

Segmenting is a skill and exercise that is not practiced and unknown by most parents and even many educators and yet, “The best predictor of reading difficulty in kindergarten or first grade is the inability to segment words and syllables into constituent sound units (phonemic awareness).” (Lyon, 1995). Segmenting is closely associated with spelling. Segmenting is taking a word and breaking it up into its sound parts. In segmenting, the sounds and not the names of the letters are used.

Reading
The READING mode should ideally be used only after practicing and becoming skilled at Skill 1 Blending and Skill 2 Segmenting. The reading mode is designed to encourage reading and discourage picture guessing by keeping the picture hidden until after the user taps on the empty frame. That way the user can read the word without being distracted by the picture and its clues as to what the word is.

In order to give lots of practice to build strong skills with blending, segmenting and reading many words were needed including those that are outside the realm of everyday common words. There is no need to know what the picture is beforehand for blending and reading. For segmenting, the picture can always be touched to identify itself.

ABC Reading Magic 3 - Letter Sound Matching

This app is designed to help your child master the letter-sound connection. This app uses four different games to help your child learn and reinforce their knowledge of which sound each letter makes. Each game involves seeing letters and hearing sounds. The child decides which sounds do and which sound do not match the letter(s) being shown. The child either identifies the correct answer by tapping or drags and drops the correct answer in its place.

This app is the third app in the ABC MAGIC PHONICS series. This app builds on the skills learned in the first two apps of this series. Those apps were about teaching letter/sound associations using phonetic pictures. This app focuses only on the sound of the letter and does not use any phonetic pictures as cues. We recommend the other ABC MAGIC PHONICS apps as means to develop and reinforce your child’s phonics skills and reading abilities.

Please note, that in this app, only the SOUNDS of the letters are used and NEVER the names of the letters. A child can actually read without knowing the common names of the letters, but a child only knowing the names of the letters cannot phonetically read. The ubiquitousness of the ABC song both at home and at school will surely give children the ability to name the letters. Many children, however, are not given the much-needed explicit instruction of the SOUNDS that the letters make. This app, therefore, is dedicated to helping children learn the SOUNDS that the letters make.

Only lower case letters are used, which is the most effective way for teaching children letters since 95% of the printed word is lowercase.

These games are designed so that children can do them independently after being given the basic instructions of how to play the games. The app has built-in feedback mechanisms to help the child to work independently. These mechanisms allow the child to learn at their own pace and in their own way.

Some pictures may seem indiscernible, but don’t worry, the pictures, when touched, will ALWAYS say their name. The child NEVER has to know what the picture is ahead of time. Tapping on the image box will ALWAYS play the audio file that names the picture.
